Derek Chauvin Found Guilty of George Floyd’s Murder
When Floyd was arrested, Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for over nine minutes as he lay face down and handcuffed to the ground repeatedly saying "I can't breathe." Someone recorded a video of the incident and it went viral on all social networks.
The incident sparked protests against racial injustice and US police brutality around the world. Chauvin was removed from the police force, arrested, and a case was filed against him. He was accused of trying to assassinate Floyd.
He was subsequently released on bail. For the past 3 weeks, the trial continued. On April 20, a jury deliberated for 11 hours on whether Chauvin was guilty of murder.
Eventually, it was announced that Chauvin was guilty of murder. Wearing a face mask and showing no visible emotion, Chauvin was escorted out of the courtroom in handcuffs. The sentence will be at a later date. Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison.
Three other former police officers who were involved in Floyd's arrest will be tried later this year. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris phoned members of the Floyd family after the verdicts.
Harris, the first Black Indian Vice President of the United States, said: “This is a day of justice in America. History will look back at this point. Police officers will always be responsible for their actions. "
